What We Do

IBEW-NECA Technical Institute (IN-Tech) is the training center for the unionized electrical industry of Cook County. The sponsoring organizations of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 134 and the Electrical Contractors Association of the City of Chicago have created IN-Tech to supply the unionized electrical industry with high quality training that values and integrates safety, quality, speed, and integrity into every class that is offered. Experienced Journeypersons will be able to sharpen their existing skills or develop new knowledge in emerging cutting-edge technologies such as Photovoltaics, battery storage, lighting control, and building automation. IN-Tech trains first year apprentice electricians by first building a foundation of electrical knowledge, safe work practices, and mechanical ability. Over the next four years IN-Tech will build on that foundation creating a qualified Journeyperson Electrician with a vast knowledge of the electrical industry, a safety driven mindset and customer-centered work ethic.

Apprenticeship

At IN-Tech we offer two types of apprenticeship: a 4-year communications apprenticeship and a 5-year construction apprenticeship. Communication Journeypersons and apprentices install and maintain structured cabling and electronic systems. Their projects typically manage card access, nurse call, CCTV, security, and networking, in the residential, commercial, and industrial sector. Construction electricians assemble, install, maintain, and test every aspect of electrical equipment and support componentry, including power distribution, power generation, energy storage, and renewable energy production components. Their projects include support for structures, energy production, and energy inversion equipment.

Through partnership, IN-Tech works with community organizations to recruit and extend opportunities of an apprenticeship to diverse communities throughout the City of Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods. Partnerships like Chicago Builds, housed at Dunbar High School, allow students the opportunity to talk with IN-Tech instructors and learn about the benefits of pursuing a career as a Local 134 electrician. IN-Tech partners with organizations such as Chicago Women in Trades, HIRE360, HACIA, African American Employment Plan Advisory Council, and countless high schools which allows IN-Tech to host events at our Alsip, Illinois training facility. These full-day events allow members of these organizations to experience a typical day in the life of an electrician enrolled in an IN-Tech program.

IBEW and ECA not only work to recruit a diverse work force their partnership creates BETTER Construction, BETTER Careers, BETTER Communities illustrated through the work of Powering Chicago. Click here to find out more at poweringchicago.com.
